Untitled 1

by Catherine Chiu

A roof shielding the rain
Red flames licking the wood
I am but home.
Fire doesn’t give me warmth
You do
But you’re away.
Ears attentive like a dog’s
listening to every happy sound
From the lips of my neighbors.
I swiftly turn my head
Towards a jolly scream
Expecting to see you striding home
Back to my arms.
